One definition of “amateur” is “One lacking the skill of a professional”. If this definition is
accurate then this production of “Tell Me On A Sunday” should not be termed an amateur
production. Quite simply, Lisa Bushell’s performance in this one woman show was phenomenal.
From start to finish, her wonderful voice, complemented by impeccable acting captivated her
audience. On this form Lisa would not look out of place on any West End or Broadway stage!

This simple story, involving the trials and tribulations of a young English girl in her search for
love in New York was beautifully staged. In one single 70 minute Act, Lisa enchanted a packed
out City of Ely Community College with 21 superb songs, each performed with a controlled
passion, enabling every ounce of emotion to be portrayed. Those lucky enough to get tickets
for this sell-out show left with a real feel-good factor and in the knowledge that they had seen a
show that would be very hard to beat.

A 15 piece orchestra led by Music Director/Conductor Graham Brown performed with great skill,
playing impeccably, supporting Lisa’s lead role throughout, and never in competition with her
beautiful voice. This excellent orchestra complemented Ms Bushell’s musical storytelling and
they should take great pride in that.

On the technical side, the sound quality was good, lighting perfectly balanced, and the staging
simple, but effective and perfect for this piece.

Special mention must go to Producer and Director Darren Smith. As an ordinary member of the
audience I could not fault anything to do with this production. A welcoming venue, complete with
attentive front of house staff and complementary boxes of chocolates on the tables set the
scene perfectly. As the lights fell and the orchestra began the overture, we knew instantly that
we were all in for a treat. Lisa’s commanding performance, her musicality, acting and skilful use
of the full scope of the stage captivated us. Darren – you and your team did a superb job.

I have only one regret, and that is that I didn’t get tickets for the last night of this performance!
